The Data Warehousing bibliography is a little skinny, in spite of the hundreds of pounds of books being published on the topic. Of those, most are more noise than message.

Brackett, M. Data Resource Quality: Turning Bad Habits Into Good Practices, Addison-Wesley Information Technology Series, 2000

This is a handbook on the bad habits that produce disparate corporate data and the good practices that can produce quality data instead. It begins with a survey on the state of the data resource and ends with a charge to action. In between is a chapter on each of the bad habits corporations are often guilty of and the good practices which can replace them.

Inmon, W.H., J. A. Zachman, and J. G. Geiger Data Stores Data Warehousing and the Zachman Framework: Managing Enterprise Knowledge, McGraw-Hill, 1997

After describing John Zachman's "Framework for Information Systems Architecture" in detail, this book presents the elements of data warehouse strategy in terms of the who, what, where, when, why, and how columns of that framework. It then presents a Framework-based methodology, describing the different perspectives people bring to a warehouse implementation.

Inmon, W.H. Building the Data Warehouse, Second Edition, Wiley Computer Publishing, 1996

One of Mr. Inmon's first (of many!) books on the subject, this one introduces the concepts of data warehousing, distinguishing data warehouses from operational data systems. It describes the evolution of decision support systems, the environment and design of warehouses, granularity and technology, along with other related subjects.

Kimball, R. The Data Warehouse Toolkit, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1996

Ralph Kimball is the industry's proponent of "dimensional modeling" for data warehouses. This is his primary book for promoting this point of view. While he presents this aspect of data warehousing well, he does it at the expense of appreciating the architecture that goes into a warehouse to support such dimensional models.

O'Neil, B. Oracle Data Warehousing Unleashed (Unleashed), Sam's Publishing, 1998

This book provides an overview of the components needed to produce an Oracle data warehouse. The CD-ROM includes many data warehousing utilities created by the author.

Redman, T. C. Data Quality Field Guide, Digital Press, 2001

This book begins with the business case for data quality. He uses the metaphor of a lake, where it is one thing to clean the lake, but it is far more effective in the long run to eliminate the causes of polution at their source. He describes the importance of measurement to achieving data quality, and describes the roles various people in the organization must play.
